Diamond Prices Falling

The RapNet Diamond Index for 1 ct. diamonds fell 4 percent in August, the company said. Half-carat stones declined by 2.2 percent. Three-caraters dropped 5.4 percent.

A statement noted that sentiment in the diamond market had declined, because of apprehension about U.S. debt, slow U.S. and European economic growth, volatile equity markets, and low consumer confidence.

Rough diamond prices were 27pc higher in 2010, topping prices before the financial crisis, De Beers said. Demand is recovering in the US, the biggest diamond market, and Chinese and Indian consumers are increasingly splashing out on the gems.

However the diamond miner is cautious about 2011, and does not expect prices to rise at such a rapid pace this year.

A recent statement by the World Diamond Council (WDC) set off grumbling in India. The WDC clarified that Zimbabwe’s Marange diamonds are not yet clear for trade and the response from Surat was a series of statements protesting the current situation. Clearly, the “issue of Zimbabwe,” should be resolved, brining Zimbabwe into the fold of legitimate diamond trade. But the voices from Surat were referring to a wider issue. Two very respected figures of India’s diamond industry were quoted.

Dallas Auction Sees Tall orders for Diamonds

Dallas–Diamonds dominated at the Dec. 6 Heritage Fine Jewelry Auction in Dallas, taking nine of the top 10 lots at the $1 million-plus jewelry event, according to a news release.

The fine timepieces portion of the two-day auction was held Dec. 7 and realized $1.2 million, bringing the auction total for Heritage Auction Galleries in Dallas to $2.2 million.

It weighs about 160 pounds and serves about 320 people at a less-than-economical price of $3,125 per slice.

Weddings Propel China to Second Largest Diamond Market

China is currently the world’s second largest diamond market, following the U.S. and surpassing Japan, according to official Chinese figures. Imports through the Shanghai Diamond Exchange rose 16.4 percent to more than $1.5 billion in 2009, the official Xinhua news agency said on Sunday.
