Sapphire is one of the most wearable of the gemstones due to its excellent hardness, durability and beautiful lustre. The word sapphire comes from the Greek "saapherios", meaning blue. Their availability is closely related to the intensity of colour, with lighter colours, pale and ice blue being more affordable to deeper colours being more expensive. Sapphires, known as 'fancy coloured sapphires' also come in yellow, orange, pink, golden, white, green, purple, violet and even black.
